Transportation Driller II - Interim

The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our Drilling Unit within the Geotechnical Engineering Section. We are recruiting for one interim fill position that will last approxmiately six months. At VTrans, a Transportation Driller II is responsible for technical field work as a lead driller operating drilling and boring equipment for the purpose of obtaining subsurface data and samples to determine their condition and to define the material properties required for safe, economical design of bridges, roadways, structures, airport runways, and other transportation projects.
The Geotechnical Section is part of the Construction and Materials Bureau located in the VTrans Central Lab in Berlin, and we provide support to other Bureaus through project concept, design, and construction. The ideal candidate will be detail oriented, have two plus years of drilling experience and possess strong oral and written communication skills. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A with a tank endorsement is strongly preferred.

Duties are mainly performed in the field at drilling sites. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials and traffic hazards during all weather conditions, and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Incumbent must be able to use tools and lift materials commonly used in routine drilling and maintenance work, and to withstand exposure to extreme outdoor weather conditions (rain, snow and extremely low and high temperatures). Must be able to lift and carry drilling equipment weighing up to 60 pounds, traverse rough, wooded and steep terrain, travel in boats or work on staging in extreme weather. Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required. Often involves extended overnight out of town travel.
High school diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years of transportation work experience as a Driller I with the state of Vermont.
Two (2) years or more experience operating drilling equipment.
Must hold New England Transportation Technician Certification Program (NETTCP) Subsurface Inspector certification or be able to within six (6) months of hire.
Must hold a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tank endorsement, or be willing and able to within the first six (6) months of employment.
