Overview

The Vermont Department of Health Brattleboro District Office has a great opportunity for a nurse who is passionate about improving community health. If you have excellent clinical skills and are looking for new ways to apply your skills outside of a clinical environment, this position may be a great fit for you! Public health nurses participate in the development, refinement and implementation of department programs and public health initiatives at the local level. Public health nurses collaborate with other professionals, community partners and consumers on strategies to improve population health. This position has occasional opportunities for direct client contact, but this is not a major aspect of the position

This is a part-time position which will be scheduled for 20 hours per week, with the potential for increased hours in the future. The position is eligible for benefits!

The Public Health Nurse's primary programmatic focus will be School Health and Healthy Homes. All Public Health Nurses are trained to provide investigative coverage for infectious disease surveillance and immunizations. All Department of Health employees participate in emergency preparedness planning and operation.

All nurses must be competent in clinical skills such as venipunctures, tuberculin skin testing, and vaccinations. This position also requires use of various database systems and Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and candidates should be proficient in these programs.

Primary duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Serving as a local resource to school nurses and administrators, helping plan activities that utilize Medicaid reinvestment funds and providing technical expertise to support school wellness plans.
  • Serving as lead for the Healthy Homes Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, providing public education, surveillance, testing and collaborating with medical practices to assure testing is being provided in the medical home.
  • Developing and maintaining internal and external collaboration, communication and partnerships to further the goals of the VT Department of Health to include, but not limited to, developing and presenting public health topics to internal and external partners.

    AHS BACKGROUND CHECKS: Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position.     Environmental Factors

    Duties primarily performed in a standard office setting. Work may be performed in clinic settings and possibly client homes. Exposure to communicable diseases and other stressful situations may occur. Private means of transportation is required. May be required to work evenings, weekends and 12 hour shifts.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Associate's degree in nursing AND two (2) years or more of professional nursing experience.

    OR

    Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

    OR

    College senior in the final semester of a bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) program. (Graduation from the BSN program must occur prior to hire and continued employment will be contingent on the employee passing the Nursing Licensure Exam (NCLEX).

    Possession of, or eligibility for, licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Vermont.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

    Special Requirements

    Must maintain Vermont licensure as a Registered Nurse as a condition of employment.
