Exercise Physiologist: Full-time (80 hours per pay period), days, eligible for full benefits.

 

The Exercise Physiologist demonstrates advanced knowledge pertaining to the design, evaluation, and standards of exercise programs for who patients who qualify or are undergoing cardiac rehabilitation. The Exercise Physiologist will function as an essential member of a multidisciplinary team directing, coordinating, and providing special expertise to staff, patients, and families participating in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program.

 

Salary Range: Min/Hour: $21.47 Mid/Hour: $26.83 Max/Hour: $32.20

 

Job Responsibilities

 

Prepares, instructs, and monitors patients undertaking exercise regimes as ordered by a provider under designated protocol

  • Assists patients in use of equipment such as exercise bicycles, treadmills, rowing ergometer, and other similar technical equipment
  • Obtains necessary clinical information such as signs/symptoms and records necessary information on forms for provider review and for patient file
  • Assesses patient complaints, discussing signs and symptoms, and responds according to protocol or reviews with appropriate provider
  • Educates patient/family regarding relevant wellness issues and exercise plan
  • Thoroughly and legibly documents in chart to be reviewed by provider
  • Translates exercise testing results and clinical/vocational history into appropriate exercise prescription

Participates in Cardiac Rehabilitation Program Development

  • Assists in developing policies and procedures for clinical exercise programs
  • Recommends and implements data analysis to monitor effectiveness of exercise programs
  • Researches and provides advice on reimbursement matters
  • Understands and works to improve relationship between the program and referring providers

Assists in the design, collection, analysis, and reporting of data

  • Actively participates in the design, implementation, and monitoring of quality improvement activities
  • Works closely with the principle investigator to complete clinical studies
  • Collects data from a variety of sources accurately and according to protocol
  • Performs analysis of data and generates specialized reports
  • Prepares written reports of findings for peer reviewed papers and abstracts based upon original research
  • Collaborates with researchers within the department and assists with research protocol


Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, in-services and workshops

  • Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific initiatives
  • Maintains membership in professional organizations and seeks specialty certification where it exists
  • Attends educational sessions offered within the UVM Health Network and/or community relevant to specific discipline
  • Participates in staff education and serves as a preceptor for new staff
  • Serves as a role model and/or preceptors to members of health care team
  • If this individual has an interest, he/she is encouraged and supported to present at local or national conferences
  • Fosters employee health by contributing organizational wellness programs

 
Develop and maintain program policy manual

  • Assure program policies are in compliance with CMS requirements
  • Present suggested updates and charges to program Operations Manager and Medical Director for approval
  • Assures program conforms to AACVPR guidelines and maintain certification

 
Provide expertise on exercising with chronic co-morbid conditions

  • Research and provide guidance on non-cardiac diseases including cancer, pulmonary disease, pulmonary hypertension, venous thromboembolism (VTE), and metabolic syndrome
  • Create individualized exercise prescriptions dependent on the disease state according to current literature and national guidelines
  • Provide education and assist staff with guidelines specific to each condition

 
Develop and implement technological advances in the program

  • Assists in developing and implementing online exercise programs and patient education
  • Works with staff and coordinates requested changes to electronic medical record function
  • Coordinate Phase III rehab activities including billing, attendance, and annual ETT’s
  • Generate annual reports for the Phase III program
  • Provides suggestions to enhance program participation and retention 

 

Job Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in exercise physiology from an accredited school
  • Up to one year experience in rehabilitation setting is preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Effective organizational skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and be able to adapt to medical situations
  • Ability to stand/walk for up to eight hours/day, bend, stoop, twist, assist patients in turning, assist patient in arising from exam table, push wheelchair patients, and assist patient in arising from and returning to wheelchair
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Familiar with the principles and practice of cardiac rehabilitation.
  • Certification in Advanced Life Support
